The worst ever fall for BA – but for cargo it could have been worse
IT is perhaps no surprise that the first quarter of 2009 was a bad one for British Airways World Cargo, with it seeing a 15.5 per cent fall in traffic, its worst ever quarterly fall. But it says something about the dire state of the air cargo market that this could be seen as a relatively good performance for the cargo unit, when compared to the industry average.
After all, Air France-KLM, one of its major European rivals, saw a fall of 21.3 per cent for the same period, and Lufthansa saw a 26.3 per cent fall. On average, the Association of European Airlines says cargo traffic from its members was down 19.6 per cent for the quarter.
While one has to be cautious about taking one month’s figures in isolation, AEA statistics for March are even more interesting.
